No evidence to link parents to William Yau's disappearance, court hears

PETALING JAYA: There is no concrete criminal evidence to convict William Yau's parents to his disappearance, a Coroner's Court was told.

The court is holding an inquest into William who was reported missing in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, on Jan 16.

Investigating officer Asst Supt Mohamad Zainal Abdullah, 35, said he made the findings after he recording statements from William's father Yau Kok Kang, mother Goh Ying Ying, grandmother Chee Chong Moi, 56, and eldest brother Eric Yau Zhen Ming.

 

"A psychologist was called to assist us during the interview sessions to ensure how far their statements were genuine.

"We found that it was hard to determine whether they were involved in this case," he saidto a question by Coroner Mohd Hezri Shaharil.

Yau, 33, and Goh, 26, had gone briefly to Onking chain store in Putra Heights to buy a washing machine, leaving Eric, seven, William and their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Cindy in their Toyota Hilux car.

 

The boy was found floating by a fisherman Satarudin Kamal who was the 14th inquest witness, near Sungai Sireh jetty on Jan 24 at about 6.30pm.

He said post-mortem conducted at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital on Jan 24, showed that William had died on the day he was reported missing.

"DNA specimen taken from William's parents matched that of William's and the body was that of William's," ASP Mohamad Zainal said.

He said other than the specimens, he also sent William's clothes and bone sample to the Chemist Department and result revealed that only William's DNA was found on the samples. To another question by the coroner on a call received by Goh from a man asking for money to release the boy, he replied: "Based on his 10-year experience as a police officer, the suspect would not make a prank call if the victim was still alive".

ASP Mohamad Zainal said following a police report lodged by Goh in Shah Alam on Jan 23, a suspect was arrested and fined RM7,000 under Section 233 of the Communications and Multi Media Act 1998 by a magistrate's court in Shah Alam.

 

He said investigation showed that the suspect had used his friend's handphone number to make the call.

Coroner Mohd Hezri is expected to deliver his verdict on June 20
